Purpose of the Role
The Caretaker is responsible for the cleanliness, hygiene, safety, security, and day-to-day upkeep of The Parish Trust’s buildings. This is a comprehensive caretaking role, with cleaning forming a significant and essential part of the post, alongside maintenance, waste management, building access, and supporting the use of the premises.
The role is suited to a practical, reliable individual who takes pride in maintaining well-run, welcoming community buildings used by staff, volunteers, and the public.
Key Responsibilities
Cleaning & Hygiene (Core Responsibility)
- Carry out and manage the general cleaning of all Parish Trust buildings, including offices, halls, kitchens, bathrooms, toilets, storage areas, and communal spaces.
- Ensure toilets are cleaned thoroughly and regularly, maintained to a high hygienic standard, and are welcoming for users.
- Keep bathrooms and kitchens well stocked with consumables such as toilet roll, hand soap, paper towels, and cleaning materials.
- Ensure cleaning is carried out in line with good hygiene practice, including the use of appropriate cleaning products and methods, especially in toilets and kitchen areas.
- Maintain and organise cleaning equipment and supplies, ensuring they are stored safely, kept in good condition, and used appropriately.
Waste Management & Recycling
- Oversee waste management and recycling across all sites.
- Ensure general waste, recycling, and hygienic waste are managed correctly and disposed of appropriately.
- Liaise with waste and recycling contractors as required.
- Monitor waste arrangements and report any issues, missed collections, or problems to management.
Maintenance & DIY
- Undertake general caretaking and DIY tasks, including:
- Minor repairs and fixing broken or worn items
- Painting, decorating, and general touch-up work
- Ongoing upkeep of fixtures, fittings, and internal and external areas
- Identify and report more significant maintenance issues requiring specialist contractors.
- Liaise with contractors where required, ensuring access to buildings and reporting progress or concerns.
Security & Keyholding
- Act as a keyholder for The Parish Trust’s premises.
- Open and close buildings for bookings, events, and activities as required.
- Ensure buildings are left secure, locked, and alarmed (where applicable).
- Be on hand to assist when unforeseen circumstances arise.
- Report any security or safety concerns promptly.
Supporting Bookings & Building Use
- Prepare rooms for use, including setting up furniture and ensuring spaces are clean and ready.
- Be available, where agreed, to open buildings for bookings and community activities.
- Respond flexibly to early morning, evening, or weekend requirements as required.
Travel Between Sites
- Travel between The Parish Trust’s two main buildings and to other locations on occasion.
- Transport small items, supplies, or equipment between sites where required.
Health & Safety
- Carry out basic visual health and safety checks of premises.
- Identify hazards, defects, or risks and report these promptly.
- Work in line with The Parish Trust’s health and safety, safeguarding, and operational policies.
Hours & Flexibility
- This is a part-time permanent role, for up to 10 hours per week.
- Hours will be worked flexibly across the week in response to building use.
- Overtime may be available by agreement to support events, deep cleaning, or additional maintenance work.
- A flexible attitude to working hours is essential.
Person Specification
Essential
- Experience of cleaning, caretaking, or premises work.
- A clear understanding that cleaning and hygiene are a major part of the role.
- Practical DIY skills and confidence carrying out basic repairs.
- Full UK driving licence and ability to travel between sites.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and able to work independently.
- Willingness to act as a keyholder and take responsibility for building access.
- Flexible approach to working hours and duties.
Desirable
- Experience managing waste, recycling, or hygiene systems in public buildings.
- Experience liaising with contractors or external service providers.
- Experience working in a community, charity, or voluntary sector setting.
- Basic health and safety awareness.
