Youth & Children’s Worker

Contract Type: Fixed Term, 1 year, with potential for permanency.
Hours: 20 per week
Salary: £24,960 p/a (£12,480 actual)

Role Purpose
This is a great opportunity for someone who’s passionate about investing in children and young people and providing them with a safe, welcoming space with role models to support them through vital times in their lives. You will create positive relationships with all children and young people that attend our provision and assist in ensuring the space is safe, sustainable and engaging. You will help facilitate activities that empower children and young people to become active citizens and create positive change, whilst at the same time being part of a growing charity, and exposing children and young people to positive adult influences that they can feel safe with and trust.

Main Responsibilities and Tasks

  1. Be a person that supports children and young people and foster connections with them to establish a trustworthy, professional relationship 
  2. You will be responsible for supporting the engagement and involvement of children and young people across our service area in the work of The Parish Trust 
  3. Attend and participate in events relating to youth and children and be a key team player 
  4. Facilitate children and young people to build their skills and confidence so that participation and contribution are maximised and that they feel able to express their views 
  5. Become familiar with the Youth Club’s Code of Conduct and practices
  6. Assist in monitoring and tracking children and young people’s progress and our impact
  7. Assisting with the practical day-to-day activities of volunteers and staff, such as setting up and packing away for activities  
  8. Help to establish needs and provide a strategic input in the shaping of the services we offer
  9. Take own initiative during all clubs to manage and de-escalate children and young people’s behaviour proactively and try to engage young people that are not engaging
  10. Help to plan and run special events during half terms and school holidays for children and young people
  11. Take part where required in the planning of new provisions in Youth and Children Engagement.

Other area of responsibilities 

  1. Establish an understanding of the behaviours and culture of the area to better understand families, children and young people who attend our services 
  2. Become familiar over time with our children and young people and where necessary
  3. With direction of Youth and Children’s Programme Manager, develop relationships with a range of stakeholders which may include youth workers, youth organisations, churches, public bodies and schools where necessary
  4. Attend and participate proactively in staff meetings, team meetings and other meetings as required including one-to-one meetings and annual appraisals 
  5. To assist with reporting of charitable activities

Person Specification

  • Empathy for and understanding of the ever changing needs of children and young people
  • Experience of working with children of all ages and understanding the different approaches required in engaging and supporting them 
  • Experience of using digital platforms to engage networks and communities 
  • An understanding of Safeguarding and Health and Safety policies and practices in the workplace 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to communicate effectively
  • Organisational skills; enabling you to handle matters efficiently and proactively 
  • IT skills including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint and willingness to learn systems specific to The Parish Trust
  • Discretion and judgement, and experience of dealing with sensitive information 
  • Confident in managing and de-escalating situations as they arise in a positive manner
  • An enthusiastic and approachable person with very high levels of initiative
  • A passion for the youth and children sector and strengthening the overall vision of The Parish Trust
  • A ‘can-do’ and flexible approach with the ability adapt to changing priorities, including a willingness to travel and work irregular hours when necessary
